Big Blue offers Jazz to software developers

IBM Malaysia has unveiled its Jazz collaborative technology and said the product helps geographically dispersed teams work together in an open, ­transparent software ­environment in real time.

“The challenges of globalisation are forcing software development teams based around the world to collaborate on projects,” said Michael O’Rourke, IBM Rational software development vice-president.

“However, barriers such as the physical location of the team members, time zone differences and project error that can occur because of any miscommunication must be overcome.”

Jazz will help resolve these ­problems, according to IBM, which was showing off the new product at its Rational Software Development Conference in Subang Jaya recently.

Agile approach slashes software development time

European manufacturers should have years of competitive advantage in embedded software development, thanks to outputs from the EUREKA ITEA software Cluster AGILE project.

So says Dr Pekka Abrahamsson of project coordinator VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland. He points to 68 pilot case studies, in industries ranging from avionics and telecoms to consumer electronics, all of which demonstrated the power of the ‘agile’ methodology for software engineering.

Software tools that simplify application of the agile approach have also been successfully demonstrated, and the results are much faster and cheaper development of quality systems.

“Agile is a new paradigm for software development that emerged around eight years ago in the USA,” explains Abrahamsson. “When we started the ITEA project in 2004, we did not know whether this new methodology could be exploited for embedded software in [manufacturing].”

Focus on the quality of software projects

Businesses are spending more money on software development as the complexity of applications increases. But as the economy plunges into recession, IT directors will find it increasingly difficult to retain a programming team capable of sustaining complex internal application development. Users need to focus on improving the quality of software development to tackle escalating costs, warns Melinda-Carol Ballou, an analyst at IDC.

An IDC survey of 149 IT departments found that 63% of users were running software development projects that were more complex now than in the past two years. Complexity has been rising due to the growth in service oriented architectures and multicore hardware, which can complicate software development and the increasing use of open source, which involves greater collaboration and co-ordination among software developers.

Downtime arising from poorly tested software is expensive. In one example from the study, IDC estimates the average cost of fixing a defect in a production system at £1,093, assuming it takes 30 man-hours to find and repair the bug.

Now, change wouldn’t seem to be a bad thing, considering the low opinion many business users have of enterprise software. But even this change-averse approach might be preferable to making a half-assed commitment to change. Google Pushing Software to Low-cost Linux PCs

With an eye for larger adoption of Linux, Google is actively working with open-source developers to integrate its applications in the OS, a Linux developer said on Tuesday.

By working with developers, Google may be trying to push more of its applications in netbooks, low-cost laptops designed to run basic applications for Web surfing and e-mail, said David Liu, Good OS Founder and President, at the Linuxworld conference in San Francisco.

Google's software offerings includes Web-based applications like Google Docs and Spreadsheets and Google Gadgets, mini-applications that sit on desktops to perform small desktop functions. Although in their infancy, shipments for netbooks are expected to explode in the next few years.

Google and Good collaborated to pre-load Google's Gadget mini-applications on GOS Gadgets 3, Good's upcoming Linux distribution, Liu said. The mini-applications allow users to play games and check system applications like battery power and the strength of a wireless network signal.

Domestic software sector boosts independent innovation

On June 19, 2008, at the China Software Innovation Forum of the China International Software & Information Service Fair 2008 (CISIS), authorities from two different sectors put forward the same opinion.

One is Dai Yulin, Standing Member of the Party Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of Dalian City, who summarized the ten-year development of Dalian's software industry. He believed that the development strategy of Dalian's software industry is the combination of industrial internationalization and independent innovation. Along with the continuous development of software export and service outsourcing, the unique feature in terms of software industry's independent innovation has come into being, and the accumulation of capital, technology and talents of independent innovation has been realized through industrial internationalization.

The other is Ni Guangnan, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, who stated that China needed software outsourcing, and needed independent software industrial system much more. Exactly speaking, China can develop offshore outsourcing under certain circumstances, but it should also focus on basic software area.

The major functions of the system will be:

Scope of work:

1. Maintain a reliable relational database that contains permits, citations, vehicles, customers and other information needed to analyze and manage parking resources.
2. Reduce office traffic by allowing customers to use the Internet to apply for and purchase permits, or pay and appeal citations.
3. Restrict access to software functions to authorized users and provide secure transfer of data between the database and our main software system.
4. The provider will provide a fully integrated parking management software system for office personnel to track customer information, account transactions, permits, citations, online appeals, vehicle registrations and other data needed to manage available parking resources.
5. The system should have the capability for the use of wireless networking for present and future applications on handheld ticketing devices.
6. The provider must provide handheld ticket writers, printers and the necessary software to issue citations and communicate bi-directionally with the database. The system should include a user interface that will allow staff to upload ticket information from the handheld ticket writers to the database and download scofflaw, and permit information to the handhelds.
7. The software will have a graphical user interface which will run on standard Windows workstations across a multi-user local area network. The supplier will provide minimum specifications for the workstations.
