China Convicts 11 in Software-Piracy Case

Microsoft Corp. said a court in China convicted 11 people for manufacturing and distributing counterfeit Microsoft software that the company valued at $2 billion.

The sentences, which Microsoft said were the toughest yet for this type of crime in China, ranged from a year-and-a-half to six-and-a-half years. The company characterized it as the largest software counterfeiting case yet in terms of lost sales.

The counterfeiting syndicate involved in the case was found to have distributed high-quality fake versions of 19 products including Windows XP, Windows Vista and Office 2007, in at least 11 languages in 36 countries, Microsoft said. Software made by the syndicate was identified in more than 300 different cities in the U.S. alone, the company added.

Rampant software piracy in China has long been an issue for companies like Microsoft because China has until now tended to be lenient with offenders of intellectual property rights. Companies have been pressuring the government for years to crackdown on the piracy of movies, music and computer software.

"I hope that this is an example of a continuation of increased international collaboration and commitment to protecting intellectual property," said David Finn, associate general counsel for worldwide anti-piracy and anti-counterfeiting at Microsoft.

Microsoft claims December’s version of the Malicious Software Removal Tool has booted one of the most popular phony security apps from almost 400,000 PCs, reports InfoWorld.

MSRT, which Microsoft pushes to Windows users as part of Patch Tuesday, erased Antivirus 2009 from over 394,000 PCs in the first nine days after it released on Dec. 9.

As the year winds down, financial analysts are predicting that Microsoft will pre-announce negative earnings for the first time since 2000 because of a flat PC market. But all things considered, 2008 was a pretty good year for the software giant.

Windows is still used on 90% of computers and Internet Explorer on 70%. Despite growing Web-based competition, Microsoft Office saw 20% growth in Q1 of fiscal 2009 and the company's server and tools division grew by 23% in Q1 2009.

On top of that, research from NPD Group this week shows that November retail sales for Macs fell 1% year over year while Windows PC sales grew 7%.

Software industry pushes for IT-driven government

When President-elect Barack Obama appoints a chief technology officer to the White House, he should make the new appointee a part of his senior economic policy team and the chief "evangelist" for innovation-spurring policies, the software and hardware industries say.

The Business Software Alliance, which represents companies like Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Cisco, and others, sent a letter to Obama last week with suggestions for what role the CTO should play in the administration. The BSA has taken other steps in the past week, such as meeting with the Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Wednesday and releasing its 2009 policy agenda on Thursday, in an appeal to the next Congress and administration to integrate information technology solutions into its policy prescriptions, both in the short term and long term.

"When dealing with every major issue, there should be a question of what is the role of IT in providing the solutions," BSA CEO Robert Holleyman said Thursday.

The industry's goals are largely aligned with the president-elect's, Holleyman said, including Obama's proposal to push for increased adoption of health IT. New legislation and a new approach to cybersecurity is needed as well, BSA members said, to improve both the government's cyberinfrastructure and its communication with citizens regarding the security of personal information.

2. Selected System will have demonstrated capability to interface with TriTech VisiCAD system.
3. Selected System should be able to automatically use the current MOSCAD Station Alerting System as a backup should the new primary System become unavailable.
4. Selected System should provide open-architecture interface to facilitate seamless upgrades or replacements in the future.
5. Selected System should be scalable.
6. Selected System should be capable of handling peak call loads with ease.
7. Selected System should process the selection of units for assignment to calls effectively, and help assure that optimal units are selected.
8. Selected System should provide easy move-up alerting functionality.
9. Integration between the new CAD subsystem with the proposed Station Alerting System.
10. Integration of the Mobile Data Computers with the proposed Station Alerting System.

HP Updates Desktop Virtualization Software

Hewlett-Packard hopes to widen the use of its desktop virtualization products with new software that will improve video playback and allow the use of USB peripherals such as webcams, the company announced Monday.

HP is also rebranding its desktop virtualization suite as the HP Virtual Client Essentials, and adding Linux support for its broker software, called Session Allocation Manager, which runs only on Windows today, HP said.

Most of the updates concern HP's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure suite, which allows a company to run multiple images of a desktop OS in virtual containers on a server, instead of having to manage a separate OS on each employee's PC.

Virtualized desktops are catching on at some businesses but companies need to provide workers with an experience similar to what they'd expect from a standard desktop PC, and that hasn't always been the case with multimedia content, said industry analyst Roger Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates.
