Red Hat pitches software-patents-free Europe

Red Hat is today expected to join others in making the case against the enforcement of patents in software across the European Union.

The company is expected to submit an 11-page report to regulators, which makes the case that patents in software damages innovation in software.

If the principles in Red Hat's report are accepted, it could fundamentally tilt the balance in Europe against those using the law to enforce software patents and trying to exact payment for alleged infringements of patents through the court system.

Red Hat is expected to deliver its report to the Enlarged Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office, which is listening to arguments on whether patents in software should be enforced and upheld in EU-member country courts and regulatory bodies. Today is the deadline for report submissions.

The board is expected to receive a similar report from patents hit factory IBM, while it has already received reports from consumer electronics giant Philips and a number of academics.

What Oracle Would Get With Sun Acquisition

The acquisition of Sun Microsystems (NSDQ:JAVA) by Oracle (NSDQ:ORCL), if it is closed as expected, would give Oracle a company whose business model has been rocky but would bring it some of the industry's top hardware and software technology and strengthen its open-source offerings.

Oracle on Monday said it plans to acquire Sun in a $7.4 billion deal announced shortly after an earlier bid by IBM (NYSE:IBM) to acquire Sun fell through.

Oracle and Sun have had complementary businesses for years, and a significant if not majority portion of Oracle's installed base has been on Sun hardware and Sun's Solaris operating system.

The proposed acquisition of Sun would force Oracle to decide how much of a hardware vendor it wants to be, as the software side of Sun is very compatible with Oracle's product offerings.

Oracle is one of the IT industry's largest software vendors, with core competencies in databases, middleware and other business applications, and an acquisition of Sun would bring a wide range of complementary technologies with limited overlapping of its existing products.

Sun would bring Oracle the MySQL database, based on open-source technology. Sun currently provides the MySQL database as a free download, with customers paying Sun and/or its solution providers for support.

Obama set to get top-secret BlackBerry: Report

WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama, who was forced to give up his unsecured BlackBerry after his inauguration amid security concerns, is set to get his hand on the software for use in and around the White House and during presidential travel, top officials have said.

The top-secret BlackBerry 8830 is in the final stages of development by the National Security Agency (NSA), which will soon begin examining it to make sure its encryption software meets federal standards. It could be ready for use in the next few months, The Washington Times reported today.

Others expected to get secure BlackBerrys likely include top aides as well as first lady Michelle Obama.

According to the report, the software being used to secure the personal digital assistant is called SecureVoice, developed by the Genesis Key, Inc of Washington.

Researcher Offers Tool to Hide Malware in .Net

A computer security researcher has released an upgraded tool that can simplify the placement of difficult-to-detect malicious software in Microsoft's .Net framework on Windows computers.

The tool, called .Net-Sploit 1.0, allows for modification of .Net, a piece of software installed on most Windows machines that allows the computers to execute certain types of applications.

Microsoft makes a suite of developer tools for programmers to write applications compatible with the framework. It offers developers the advantage of writing programs in several different high-level languages that will all run on a PC.

.Net-Sploit allows a hacker to modify the .Net framework on targeted machines, inserting rootkit-style malicious software in a place untouched by security software and where few security people would think to look, said Erez Metula, the software security engineer for 2BSecure who wrote the tool.

"You'll be amazed at how easy it is to devise an attack," Metula said during a presentation at the Black Hat security conference in Amsterdam on Friday.

US software firm sees great potential in Region 10 BPO

American software executive Todd Grannis visited Cagayan de Oro two years ago for a vacation with his wife Malissa, but never expected he´d one day be considering making it a base for his international operations.

Grannis is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Visp.net, based in Oregon, USA called which designs and markets software aimed at making Internet Service Providers (ISPs) better.

"I came here on the word of my friend Glenn Lewman, but after few days saw the potential for the future growth of our company," Grannis said. Lewman is one of the founding fathers of the city´s famous whitewater rafting industry and is the maker of the famous Sotar (for State-Of-The-Art Raft).

"People we met here were so warm, friendly and kind," Grannis recalls. "It was an emotionally rich experience for me."

Although Cagayan de Oro is one of the Philippines biggest cities, Grannis noted its cost of labor is relatively lower compared to Manila and Cebu, leaving workers with larger discretionary incomes. He also notes it is relatively safer than many other urban centers in the country.

Like Lewman before him, Grannis "did the math" and noted how the highly skilled yet affordable manpower in the information and communications industry (ICT) of Cagayan de Oro would build on his company´s strategic advantages and give them a leg up on their competitors.

SaaS vendor converts offering to packaged software

n the past few years a rush of software vendors have latched onto the software-as-a-service bandwagon, converting packaged software offerings for use in the Web-hosted model.

Now one longtime SaaS vendor is doing the opposite, after finding that numerous enterprises are not comfortable running applications outside their firewalls.

“Some companies had issues with putting information out on the cloud, because of security and compliance concerns,” says Rick McEachern, co-founder and chairman of Relational Networks, maker of the LongJump application building platform.

Relational Networks in Sunnyvale, Calif., was founded in 2003 to provide Web-based CRM to the media industry. In 2006, the company used the same Web application platform that drives its CRM business to introduce LongJump, a cloud service that lets enterprises and ISVs build and deliver their own SaaS applications.

We are USA based organization. We are looking for qualified and experienced service provider for our requirement of Software Development. We are looking to develop all new Web based Case Management Software. The current system is a Lotus Notes-based system in which all case and financial information is entered. The database contains all case maintenance and financial data for the programs. The database is also used in calculating all required reports.
The development and implementation of the CMS must:

1. Technology must be ASP.NET with VB.NET or C#.NET (VB is preferred).
2. System must be able to run on Windows IIS server, Database must be SQL Server 2005 or greater.
3. Allow for necessary financial tracking, authorizations, and payments via a customizable fee schedule.
4. Track client caseload information, and allow for search capabilities based on key data elements.
5. Allow for set up and connection to employers databases.
6. Provide for offline capabilities, and the ability to synchronize offline data with the main database.
7. Provide for easy portability or extraction of information to utility systems including, but not exclusive to, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
8. Allow for multiple sign-ons per User ID.

Windows Embedded adopts software + services, Server version

Microsoft has announced a new software + services strategy, which includes an MSDN subscription and an update system, as well as a new product: Windows Embedded Server.

Microsoft has made a slew of Windows Embedded announcements this week, all of which are targeted at the developers and companies who work with embedded products. The software giant started moving towards a software-plus-services strategy by offering developers a new MSDN subscription and an update system, as well as adding Windows Embedded Server to its line of products. I had a chance to chat with John Doyle, Group Product Manager of Windows Embedded, to try to make heads and tails of the changes.

Windows Embedded Server, which is based on the Microsoft Windows Server core operating system, is a new product that enables OEMs to design, build, and deploy server appliances that have smaller footprints, robust networking, and support for large storage. According to Doyle, the release is part of Microsoft's goal to help companies wanting to transition from building just the device to building a system solution. In areas like industrial automation, it allows companies to get data about how their machines are doing, mine it appropriately, and then make decisions to prevent systems from failing. Microsoft believes the addition will translate into new revenue channels for Windows Embedded partners and OEMs. They will be able to effectively offer services to manufacturing companies for analyzing data that is gathered.
