Few organisations purposely commit software piracy

A number of UK organisations being branded as thieves for committing software ‘piracy’ in the Business Software Alliance’s (BSA) annual report.

Acresso Software believes it is a highly complex area. Vincent Smyth, RVP Sales, Acresso Software, comments: “From our experience, very few organisations purposely commit software piracy. An IT manager is faced with an incredibly large and complex collection of software applications that have grown over the years, and unfortunately many find it impossible to have a holistic and comprehensive view of their software infrastructure to resolve the question of who needs what kind of software. For this reason, organisations are often under-buying, but also over-buying software licences.

“The biggest organisations are often the ones most affected by this lack of clarity – the larger the user base, the greater the complexity – and very few IT managers in blue-chip organisations which are likely to be highly regulated would deliberately look to avoid license fees. In fact, we are even finding that IT managers frequently over-buy licences to cover their backs and stay compliant.

Smyth concludes: “It’s great that the BSA is highlighting the problem of ISVs not being paid revenue that is rightfully theirs, they need to take circumstances into consideration more. Technology is now available to determine usage demographics at a granular level, ensuring that employees that need a particular piece of software are fully equipped, and those software licenses that sit on people’s desktop unused get re-allocated. With Forsythe Technology stating that as much as 20 per cent of all installed desktop software is unused and becoming shelf-ware, conducting a thorough audit can end up saving a business a lot of money.”

Acresso Software’s FLEXnet solution tracks and monetises usage of new and existing software to maximise an organisation’s software investment.

Software firm grows as part of area's technology base

Using a simple business philosophy and commitment to client service, a home-grown information technology and software company has created a name for itself in Tallahassee and beyond.

Now settled in new offices off Commonwealth Boulevard, Infinity Software Development Inc. is part of the technology infrastructure the area offers. The company has achieved what it has through attention to each customer's needs in the 14 years it has been in business.

"It was started based on providing programming services to clients right here in Tallahassee, through the principle of, really, delivering, doing a great job," said Infinity President Jon Taylor. "And doing that on a project will often get you several other opportunities for work."

Company owner and founder Tom Lynch's philosophy is still central to the success of the firm, which has 130 employees.

"The model that Tom started and that we have stuck to since then is that customer satisfaction and delivery are how you're successful. It sounds trite, but that's proven to be the case for us," Taylor said.

Beth Kirkland, executive director of the Economic Development Council of Tallahassee/Leon County Inc. sees Infinity as a key component of the technology community the area needs to attract more firms, especially in critical fields.

Oracle net profit jumps, but outlook cautious

BOSTON (Reuters) - Oracle Corp (ORCL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a 27 percent rise in quarterly profit as sales of new software beat expectations, but the company gave a cautious outlook citing economic uncertainties, and its shares fell 3 percent.

Oracle, whose shares had been near a seven-year high, posted May quarter results that topped Wall Street estimates on virtually all measures. But the company cautioned that while business is growing, deals are taking longer to close than they have historically as customers are giving them more scrutiny.

"Bit more cautious environment. But ... we have a big enough pipeline hopefully to get through it all," Oracle President Charles Phillips said on a conference call.

Oracle gave forecasts for its fiscal first quarter, ending in August, roughly in line with expectations. It saw revenue growing 18 percent to 20 percent, net income at 17 to 18 cents per share, and earnings excluding items at 26 to 27 cents.

Analysts, on average, were looking for earnings excluding items of 27 cents per share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Bangalore's software exports to touch $13.5 billion

BANGALORE: Unperturbed by the US economic recession, the software exports from Bangalore is expected to touch 13.5 billion dollars for the current fiscal.

Talking to ANI, Karnataka Principal Secretary for Information Technology, Biotechnology and Science and Technology, Ashok Kumar C. Manoli said that Bangalore was the favored Information Technology (IT) destination and would expect to reach 60 billion dollars of software exports by 2010.

"Two committees have been formed under Infosys chairman and mentor NR Naryana Murthy and Biocon chief Kiran Majumdar Shaw to review the state IT and BT policy," Manoli added.

It may be recalled here that Narayana Murthy recently said that Pune would take over Bangalore in software exports soon.

According to him, 116 IT companies have been added to a total of 2000 IT companies.

"Bangalore has 248 Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs) and 183 bio-technology companies with a work force of 5.5 lakhs techies," he said.

Manoli further said that the BJP Government-led by Chief Minister B.S Yeddyurappa had announced a separate policy for Bangalore in their election manifesto and this has consolidated their vote share and won 18 MLAs from Bangalore.

Time to blow up the software industry

Vinnie Mirchandani’s post, Call to Steve Jobs: Please reshape the enterprise software market was bound to get a reaction out of my Irregular chums. 70 reactions to be precise as at the time of writing this post. That’s the number of posts to our Google Group on the topic with the title for this post supplied by Vinnie. Looking back over the thread, there’s enough to work up at least three posts but for this one, I’m sticking to Vinnie’s main theme which can be boiled down to a single sentence: Why is it that despite all the interest in saas and enterprise 2.0 that the industry offers so very little apparent bang per buck for business as a whole? Tied to that are the inevitable questions about time to market for new solutions`.

10 ways to cut software development costs

This list of 10 ways to cut cost from the app dev lifecycle comes from Experimentus, a UK-based software management consultancy...

1. Focus on well documented Functional Requirements

Without well documented Functional Requirements, there is potential for a system to be delivered which does not meet the customer’s expectations. For example, perhaps it does not work as they believe it should – even though the development team believe that they have worked in line with the requirements as documented. This can lead to development rework, which is likely to delay the release, increase costs, and create discord between the customer and the software team.

2. Ensure all Non Functional Requirements are clearly defined early

Many organisations focus solely on the Functional aspect of systems – WHAT it does – rather than the Non-Functional – HOW it does it. Non-Functional elements comprise everything from performance to security to usability.

Without clear, early definition of Non-Functional requirements, it is possible that a system could be delivered which does exactly what the customer wants – but is difficult to use, slow, insecure, unreliable, or is not scalable. Once again, this can lead to development rework – although some non-functional areas are so integral to the design of the product, it can be difficult to correct them without starting the project again.

3. Ensure change control procedures are in place

Without Change Control, system development can find itself in an uncertain and constantly changing state. For example, development may be initially performed against what is believed to be the final version of a requirements document. However, more changes might be made to the requirements whilst development continues, each change without a proper impact assessment.

As there is no procedure for consulting with or informing development of the changes, it may not be the case that the knowledge of the changes is passed on in a timely fashion. Additionally, the impact of some changes might be so large that they cannot be incorporated into the software easily at a late stage. In this case, if the changes are deemed to be vital, major development rework might have to take place. For these reasons, every change should be strictly controlled. Change can be allowed, but should only take place after a full impact assessment to see how it will affect the project timescales and costs.

4. Ensure strict Configuration Management is in place for code, data and documentation

Without Configuration Management, a high quality of testing is impossible. This is because there cannot be high levels of confidence that the right version of the software or documentation is being tested, or that the right version will be released to the customer.

Organisations with poor Configuration Management might test one version of a product, and yet perhaps release a slightly different version – a version which then enters the field UNTESTED. It is viewed as untested, as potentially major faults may have been introduced which change the behaviour of parts of the system from that which was intended – or, in some cases, even disabling the entire system.

5. Focus quality approach on product risks, focus on preventing rather than detecting defects

It has been proven many times that the later in the software development lifecycle that a defect is found, the more costly it is to rectify it. For example, correcting a mistake in a requirements document before development begins is a far quicker and cheaper activity than correcting the software after it has been developed against the faulty requirements document.

6. Begin UAT(User Acceptance Testing) test design during requirement definition

If an organisation is using the ‘V-model’ of software development correctly, then the test team should be involved with the project from the very beginning – during the requirements definition. Not only can the testers use their expertise and experience to help assess whether or not particular requirements are testable or not, but they can also start to design the relevant tests, which helps to ease the test schedule later.

In this scenario, the User Acceptance Tests should correspond directly to the user requirements. This is because the requirements are the items that the user wishes to see in the system, and the tests represent the way that the system is proved to meet those requirements. It clearly follows that the best time to write the UAT is when the requirements are being constructed.

7. Begin system test design during the system design stage

It is important that the system is designed to be easily testable, if possible. This can only occur if testing expertise is involved in the system design stage. Collaboration between the testers and the system designers can help ensure that the system produced fulfils this aim. During this early involvement, the testers can also start to construct the System Tests, which helps ease the testing schedule. An additional benefit to this approach is the enhanced team collaboration between the system design and testing team.

8. Focus test effort on unit test where it is cheaper

As previously stated, correcting defects earlier in the software development lifecycle is far easier, quicker and cheaper than otherwise. Given this axiom, it is surprising that many organisations spend little or no time on unit testing activities – often with the reasoning that “our developers develop, and our testers test”.

However, not only does this approach mean that potential defects reach later stages of testing than they should, it is possible that they may not be found at all – as later stages of testing normally perform different testing activities, in different ways, to those used in unit testing.

9. Plan test approach using risk to define focus of test effort

Test time is often limited, due to reasons like fixed release dates, or late software delivery from the development team. This can often mean that not all tests that were originally planned are carried out.

In this scenario, it is vital that those elements of the system that are considered critical to product success have been tested. Therefore, the approach to testing should always be to focus effort on the ‘highest risk’ areas of the system first. Following this, medium risk and low risk areas of the system can be tested, in turn, as time permits.

This risk-based approach ensures that, when under time pressures, the areas of the system which remain untested (and potentially flawed) are the lowest risk areas possible from those that are left to be tested.

10. Use tools to test for functional and non functional errors very early on when they are cheaper and more effective at removing errors, and throughout the lifecycle

If an automated test set is created and maintained, it can be repeatedly utilised from an early stage of the software development lifecycle, as a ‘smoke test’. This method has the potential to find a lot of defects quickly at an early stage, saving time in later test phases.

Additionally, sometimes specific tools may indicate flaws in the system design – which should be exposed as early as possible. For example, early performance testing on parts of the system that are available might reveal a poorly-designed module, which would hinder the system beyond the tolerance levels of the user when released.

In this way, the module is easily identified, isolated, and fixed or replaced – an activity that would be much harder if performance testing was only conducted when the system was about to be delivered to the customer.

'India is the brain of software in the world'

Healthcare is an area that ranks amongst the issues of grave concern for India. Hence, it didn't come as a surprise that SAP Summit's esteemed chief guest - Union minister for health and family welfare Dr Anbumani Ramadoss - chose the occasion to deliver an address on the issues that concern him. Extolling IT for being the flagship industry of the country, he proceeded to elaborate on how IT could prove to be an enabler for the healthcare industry.

"Healthcare is the biggest industry in the world today. In addition to healthcare services, the industry is also made up of pharma, clinical trials, health insurance and so on. In the coming years, the dependency of healthcare on IT will increase significantly," he opined.

He predicted that the country will witness a revolution in the rural health sector in the coming days, as the extensive, mega budget plans set in motion begin to deliver results. "We have also made significant investments for creating linkages between IT and healthcare." He also forecasted a bright future for the health insurance industry and major developments in the field of telemedicine.

Google courts Web developers

Google has been courting software developers to entice them into a money-making relationship built on turning its array of online widgets into a global infrastructure.

At a conference in San Francisco, said to be the biggest yet for net developers, the search giant made clear that the Web is the future for application development.

It wants its own bit of web infrastructure – the Google Cloud – to be more accessible to developers and spent two days wooing them to build and run applications on it.

To encourage them aboard, Google invited the 3,000 developers to mash-up Google’s online services, like Gmail, Docs, Maps and Search, with their own applications.

To show client-cloud connectivity, it showed off Google Gears, a browser add-on in the Adobe Flash mould that allows for richer browser experiences, to improve search in MySpace email.

It then showcased the new Google Web Toolkit, so rich net applications can be Java-built, and the hosting of new Ajax libraries, which enhances applications via JavaScript tagging.

Top of its agenda, Google wants the web browser – the enabler of its cloud – to have more functionality, interaction and to evolve so it becomes as powerful as its desktop counterpart.

But Google is also forward-thinking: it revealed Web 2.0-style application widgets for single sign-on for the Web, universal authorisation and a social network development ‘standard.’

“These diverse tools and technologies might seem loosely unintegrated and targeted at different areas,” said Ovum analyst Madan Sheina.

“In fact they're all cogs and wheels of a more meaningfully connected web that hosts Google web services powered by the Google App Engine. Importantly some of these web services and applications aren't written just by Google, but by an entire market of independent developers.”

The analyst believes most of these third-party developers no longer build 'cool' web applications just for the sake of it; rather they want a slice of Google as a lucrative advertising business.

“Google likes to separate its web development technologies from its advertising. But the two are inextricably linked,” Ms Sheina said.

“Google's monetisation strategy is simple. Invest in advancement of the web by allowing users to do more on the internet. That makes the Web a much bigger market for Google to monetise services like search.”

For this reason, she said Google sees a “pile of money in its web application development efforts downstream”. However the company knows that, currently, the best way to get there is to get freelance developers to build browser-based applications to help thicken its Cloud.

China software industry ranks fourth globally, but still a long way to go

China's annual output value topped 583.4 billion yuan (84.5 billion U.S. dollars) in 2007, becoming the world's fourth largest software producer. There was still a long way for domestic software companies to go, officials said here on Thursday.

Lou Qinjian, Industry and Information Technology vice minister, said at the International Software China 2008 show that the Chinese software industry had started from scratch since the country began its reform and opening-up three decades ago. It had grown into a fundamental industry with strategic importance to the country.

The country's share of the global software industry rose from 1.2 percent in 2000 to 8.7 percent in 2007, with an annual growth rate of more than 30 percent due to a favorable policy environment.

Cao Jianlin, Science and Technology vice minister, said the country should make an even bigger effort in innovation and personnel training to sustain the industry's long-term healthy development.

The International Software China 2008 opened in Beijing on Thursday and runs through Saturday. Its focus is on industrial policy planning, industrial standards, software technologies and development, investment and financing and enterprise personnel recruiting.

‘Sense of crisis for Indian software firms is past’

The global IT outsourcing market was returning to normalcy and the `sense of crisis' about the market among the Indian software Companies had passed, according to the joint-chief executive of Wipro's IT business, Girish Paranjpe.

"The deal flow is getting back to normal and funnel is picking up on outsourcing-kind of deals. The sense of crisis has passed. The feeling is that the worst is behind us," Paranjpe told the media on the sidelines of an event at Wipro campus.

While the deal flow from the US and other Markets, to the Indian IT sector was getting back to normal, the market scenario for the rest of the current year would be clearer only in the next three months, Paranjpe said.

Paranjpe, who in a recent management restructuring took over as the joint-CEO of the software major's IT business, indicated that the European Markets also remained stable. "We have not seen any crisis there (in Europe). Nothing seems to have changed," he said of the business in that region.

Wipro also said that the pricing environment on software outsourcing contracts remained stable. "There are no signs of pressure on pricing," Paranjpe said.

About the depreciating rupee, Paranjpe said that "the sharpness in the fall of the rupee" was not expected by the company.

The company continued to expand its manpower based on business needs, Paranjpe said.

Microsoft Brings The Heat To Software Pirates

In the latest salvo of its ongoing war against software piracy, Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT) late Monday announced the filing of 21 lawsuits in federal court in 14 states against resellers who it claims have been illegally distributing its software.

Sharon Cates, an antipiracy attorney at Microsoft, says many of the resellers targeted have been using a tactic known as hard disk loading, which involves taking a single piece of software and loading on multiple PCs, and then selling those PCs to unwitting customers.

In this scenario, not only do customers run the legal risks involved with using unlicensed software, they also lose out on upgrade rights, access to technical support, and key security protections, Cates said. Hard disk loading also leads to Microsoft's honest channel partners being undercut by unscrupulous resellers, she added.

IBM Transforms How People Work Together to Deliver Software

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced new software that will transform how people will collaborate thereby driving greater value and performance from their globally distributed software investments. In front of more than 3,500 customers and business partners attending the IBM Rational Software Development Conference, IBM announced 20 products that break down the walls that inhibit organizations from truly collaborating with partners, suppliers, customers and their employees. These new offerings use IBM's Jazz collaborative technology to help geographically distributed software delivery teams work together in an open, real-time and transparent manner to more effectively deliver and source software solutions.

The challenges of globalization are forcing companies to become more nimble, using an increasingly geographically-dispersed and virtual workforce to remain competitive. In the world of software delivery, this means around the clock collaboration with specialized teams around the globe to pick up where another left off. For other stakeholders in an organization, such as lawyers, a finance department, CIO or CEO, there is an increased need for visibility into how the software is delivered on a global scale. Technologies built on, or using, Jazz can interoperate with software from other vendors allowing customers to significantly improve their ability to communicate data within and between their enterprise.
