Web 2.0 Development For The Common Man

Talk about tilting at windmills. WaveMaker CEO Chris Keene is challenging Microsoft's Visual Studio while simultaneously pointing out the drawbacks of Java development. Keene may be suffering delusions of grandeur--or perhaps he's onto something.

Keene has been beating the drum of faster, easier Web 2.0 development since joining WaveMaker (then called ActiveGrid) in January 2007. The company's WaveMaker Visual Ajax Studio pulls popular open source development tools -- Spring, Hibernate, Dojo, etc. -- into a visual application builder. (InformationWeek featured WaveMaker as our Startup Of The Week earlier this month.)

Not long ago, WaveMaker released the results of a survey on Web 2.0 development that it commissioned from Precision Marketing Group. The key finding: 83% of respondents said their companies wanted to move applications to the Web but lacked the resources and expertise to do it. Development model predicts odds of software flaws

Researchers from a German university have developed a model to predict programming errors in applications.

The method has the potential to save software companies money by allowing them to isolate parts of their code that need more rigorous testing, says Kim Herzig, a researcher at the Universität des Saarlandes in Saarbrücken, who wrote his master's thesis on the project.

"We try to find which aspects of code correlate to defects in the past," Herzig says.

Software companies rarely test every single line of code in their software. Testing is expensive, and companies are under pressure to release products. But fixing bugs after a product has been released is also expensive and inconvenient for customers, Herzig says.

Can Microsoft make users 'love' its software?

At Microsoft's Convergence conference, the company claimed that it could get end-users to not just accept but love its Dynamics ERP and CRM software

End-user adoption is often cited as a key stumbling block in ERP (enterprise resource planning) and CRM implementations. But Microsoft is asserting that improvements in its Dynamics line of software will have users swooning with passion, not seething with frustration.

"About two years ago, I started making the claim within Dynamics not to just be the best in the industry, but really make something people love," said Jakob Nielsen, principal user experience manager for Dynamics, at the company's Convergence conference in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday.

The problem, as Nielsen noted, is that "when it comes to emotional connections with business software, it's not so positive most of the time. 'Hate' is probably the word used more often."

While users traditionally want their software to be usable and useful, Microsoft's research also considered a third factor: The seemingly elusive "desirability."

IBM promotes agile development

IBM again touted agile software development methods on Tuesday at the Software Development Conference & Expo West 2008 in Santa Clara, Calif., with an official saying the company itself probably has one of the world's largest adoptions of agile methods.

In a keynote presentation and in correspondence afterward, Per Kroll, chief architect for IBM Rational expertise development and Innovation, cited the company's proliferation of agile practices among some of its approximately 35,000 developers.

"I think in general we have 1,000-plus people [using] agile in the IBM community," with an additional 2,000 trained in agile practices, Kroll said. He said, though, that he did not anticipate that all 35,000 IBM software developers would adopt the methodology.

Adobe launches rich web-development tools

Adobe's attempts to push interest in rich internet applications received a boost with the official launch of its AIR cross-operating system runtime and Adobe Flex 3 open-source framework.

Launched on Monday, Adobe claims AIR combines the dynamic nature of the web with the data capabilities of the desktop, while Flex 3 is a cross-platform set of components and tools for building rich internet applications (RIAs) that run on any browser and operating system.

Targeted at both designers and developers, AIR and Flex 3 are described by Adobe chief technology officer Kevin Lynch as technologies intended to "create highly interactive and expressive applications".
