Remember the days when everyone knew that Microsoft was a software company? The company's focus was placed squarely on Windows, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Office, and no one even considered the possibility of it becoming an online firm or providing any other service outside of the software industry.

But now, everything is different.

Instead of focusing all its attention on the software space, Microsoft has decided that it needs to split its attention into different markets in order to stay successful in the industry. Now, it's not only a software company, but it runs a video game business, and has consistently tried to cement itself in the online space. And even in that online space, it can't decide if it wants to focus all its time on Live Mesh, search, or advertising.

Microsoft focusing its attention in other markets isn't necessarily a bad thing. After all, it's one of the most important and prominent companies in tech and to think that it shouldn't expand outside software is ludicrous. But the main problem I have with Microsoft's identity problem is that it doesn't know how to focus.

Software piracy matters to local developers, too

Software piracy is often described as a victimless crime that only affects the pockets of software giants such as Microsoft and Oracle. Just don't tell that to "mentor capitalist" Joey Gurango, founder and CEO of local company Gurango Software Corp..

A former managing director of Microsoft's R&D division, Gurango says that while software piracy does bite into the profits of major software firms, it also kills smaller startups that do not have the money to protect their creations from unscrupulous business owners who want to cash in on other people's investment.

He cited the case of one five-man startup company in Manila that spent close to three years building proprietary software for public schools. He said the company was able to get several clients only to discover that its much touted new software was already being copied and used by other schools without paying a single centavo in license fees.

"Now, two of their employees want to quit. This isn't an isolated case. There are literally hundreds of people who invested their time, blood, sweat and tears into their products and are being deprived of their just rewards. These are Filipinos like us," he said at the launch of Global Anti-Piracy Day in Makati.

Oracle sells hosted call center software

MANILA, Philippines -- Oracle is now selling the Web-based model to call centers as a means of addressing challenges such as agent attrition and low customer satisfaction.

Oracle, which has built its enterprise software business on packaged products, is selling a solution called "Contact Center Anywhere" (CCA).

As its name implies, the solution can be deployed via a hosted model, or allowing a contact center to run different communication channels such voice-based telephony or email on a single IP-based infrastructure.

The product can be deployed as a multi-site solution or as an on-premise single-site solution with built-in switching and network support, according to Oracle.

One of the current challenges faced by contact centers in India, China and the Philippines is how to upgrade existing infrastructure to handle increasing customer service requirements, according to a study by industry monitor Callcentres.net.

5. Individual Exam Score reports shall be generated by the system that consist of personal information, agency information, training history information (courses, certificates, etc.,) and other information associated with the student(s).
6. Actual content sections and number of sections (modules) will be determined pending discussions with the successful firm. An outline of the current training content of each section is enclosed with the given document.
7. Each section or module is to contain approximately 20-25 total questions in the base group. The system should have the ability to give each individual student 4-5 randomly chosen questions from the base group of questions to allow for a check for understanding of the content at the end of each section.
8. Upon successful completion of the course, each student shall be issued a certificate of completion by the system.

Symantec sees pay-per-use future for software

Virtualisation could end expensive long-term software licensing in favour of a pay-per-use model, according to Symantec.

Executives at the company said that year- or months-long licences covering multiple machines could be slashed to pay-per-day, per-hour or even per-second licensing deals using virtualised applications.

Virtualised or streaming applications, where software is run on a central machine and streamed to computers over a network, allows monitoring of precisely how long each instance of the software is used.

Ken Berryman, vice president of endpoint virtualisation at Symantec, said: "You can detect application usage so you can cut the number of licences down to what is being used.

"There are a lot of customers that would like to use that to only have to pay when using the software but there is resistance among vendors to change the licensing model.

I had a long visit from Richard Rabins of Alpha Software on Wednesday. It was supposed to be a short software demo and a brief lunch, but time got away from both of us.

I'll write about the demo another time. One of the topics we touched on in a wide-ranging conversation hit a nerve. As Richard's story goes, when Alpha sold the AlphaWorks package to Lotus, at the last minute Lotus mentioned that they wanted one of the key AlphaWorks developers to work for Lotus.

"I let them know that they could have mentioned that a bit earlier. The answer was nevertheless a resounding NO! Software developers are not fungible commodities to be bought and sold. You can't grow or train great developers: they just happen. We eventually compromised, and he went on loan to Lotus for six months."
