GE Aircraft Engines to outsource software from India

BANGALORE: Acknowledging India's prowess in information technology, GE Aircraft Engines has said it intended to develop software for digital electronic control systems for helicopter engines in this country as part of its long-term strategy.

The company's regional vice-president, T700 Sales, Asia-Pacific, Peter Gianonatti, told PTI here that India was known for its expertise in software and software development and GE's vision was to have software for such systems to be outsourced to India.

Gianonatti also revealed that his company was currently engaged in talks with Bangalore-headquartered Hindustan Aeronautics Limited on co-development and co-production of helicopter engines.

India was a much larger market than countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Korea and Japan, he said. "That's all the reason why we would like to be a significant contributor to this market and supplier of engines".

"Because of trade sanctions, we have not been here,” Gianonatti pointed out, adding, the company was currently engaged in studying the market in India to understand utility and attack helicopter needs in terms of engines that GE could supply.

Trying to make a hard-sell for T700 engines, he said 4,000 of them have already been sold to US military and militaries of other countries.

STPI sofware export awards given

CHANDIGARH: As part of e-revolution 2009, STPI software exports awards for 2008-09 were given away by Dr Omkar Rai, senior director, STPI, to IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) companies from the region for excelling in the global market. STPI had categorized units in multinationals and SME segments for both software development and ITES sectors.

Infosys Technologies Ltd was given the Highest Exports Award in software development category and Dell International Services (I) Pvt Ltd in IT-enabled services.

The highest exports awards for software development for SME category were bagged by Visionaire Technologies Pvt Ltd of Haryana, Mobera Systems Pvt Ltd of Chandigarh and Smartdata Enterprise India Ltd of Punjab. In ITES segment, the highest export awards for SME category went to Seamless Soft & Rece Solutions Pvt Ltd from Chandigarh, Webart Softech from Haryana and ADI back-office from Punjab.

Compuware Acquires Privately-Held Gomez for $295 Million

Compuware Corporation, a company that has a global presence in the application performance management software segment, reportedly announced that it finalized a deal to acquire the privately-held Gomez, a participant in the Web application experience management market for $295 million.

The deal is expected to be close in November, company officials said.
According to Bob Paul, Compuware’s (News - Alert) president and CEO, Compuware and Gomez supply the industry’s sole unified application performance management solution, which have utility across both enterprise and internet.

“For business and IT executives who are moving more business-critical applications onto the Internet, Compuware can now offer unified visibility, isolation and resolution of application performance problems from the data center to the customer, Paul said in a statement. Competitive offerings only cover isolated portions of the Enterprise-Internet application delivery chain."

The Lexington, Mass.-based Gomez currently includes 272 employees in its global workforce. More importantly all of these employees, including its management team, will likely continue to work with Compuware once the acquisition deal is finalized.

Samsung to Offer Mobile Access to Oracle, Other Software

Samsung has developed a mobile CRM (customer relationship management) service, based on Oracle products, that it partially hosts from a data center in New Jersey.

It showed off the new service during CTIA in San Diego, but doesn't plan to officially announce it until Oracle Openworld next week.

While Oracle already offers a very basic version of its CRM system for mobile phones, Samsung's has many more features, said Jae Shin, senior director of mobile services for Samsung.

For instance, Oracle's mobile offering displays connections between customers in a spreadsheet. But Samsung has developed a hub-and-spoke graphic that shows users at a glance which customers know each other.

Sales people who use the software can click on a customer name in their contact list and find a record of historical contact with the customer.

IBM announces expanded social software tools

IBM today announced an expanded set of social software tools and capabilities for enterprise collaboration that brings features such as micro-blogging from the home into the business environment.

The new release of Lotus Connections expands on IBM's commitment to bringing a business-grade social software platform to the market, the company said in a statement.

"With Lotus Connections, we have merged document sharing and social networking capabilities to create a comprehensive collaboration platform for business," said Karthik Padmanabhan, country manager - Lotus-Software Group - IBM India/South Asia.
