Google's Macro Software Threat

A couple micro-tweaks suggest that Google is becoming a macro-threat to Microsoft's business software division.

The Internet giant announced Wednesday a new feature called "Google Apps Script" that allows users to customize online software with programmed functionality. Based on Javascript, a popular scripting language, the feature--known to Excel users as "macros"--will allow users to create, analyze and make changes to online spreadsheets.

Eventually, says Google, the technology will span across its online document suite. For now, however, the company is focusing on spreadsheets and inviting a handful of developers to help it work out the kinks.

The introduction of Google Apps Script is the second of two major steps this year toward making Google Spreadsheets a more serious competitor for serious business folk. Meanwhile, Microsoft ( MSFT - news - people ) is frustrating loyal business and financial users, a sector in which "speaking Excel" is an occupational prerequisite, with the take-it-or-leave-it software strategy for its newer operating systems.

With it's Office 2003 software suite, Microsoft won the hearts and minds of businesses at a time when most companies were transitioning to digital productivity tools. But in its latest--and only--offering for Vista, Office 2007, Microsoft tweaked the flow and feeling of the software's user interface, presumably to make the software easier for casual users.

Software pirates pinpointed on Google Map

PORTLAND, Ore. — Software vendors fed up with software piracy have responded by beefing up their licensing and activation procedures, only to have pirates crack their code again.

A company called V.i. Laboratories Inc. is proposing a new approach called CodeArmor Intelligence, which embeds stealth algorithms inside programs that "phone home" with information about the unauthorized usage of software, including their Internet domain and even a company location on a Google Map.

"We go after organizations that are using illegal software, giving rewards of up to a million dollars to insiders that report and help us document misusage," said Keith Kupferschmid of the Software and Information Industry Association. "But with V.i. Labs' new technology, organizations can potentially generate high-quality leads to recover revenue from businesses using pirated software without insiders."

Software industry groups offer legal services to vendors using the new anti-piracy tool, helping them to recoup income lost due to piracy by pressuring companies using unlicensed software to pay licensing fees.

"Often we are not dealing with companies that use pirated software, but rather ones that purchase 10 copies legally, but then load it onto 50 people's machines," said Kupferschmid.

EDA software tools and other expensive software tools for engineers have been hard hit by piracy. V.i. Labs charges vendors $50,000 or more to monitor its programs, providing daily reports on unauthorized usage.

IBM Targets SMBs with New Software

Information technology giant IBM has teamed up with finance management software vendor Intuit Inc to launch an appliance in the United States that eases the business operation of small and medium-sized enterprises.

The appliance, the “Smart Cube,” is in fact designed to capitalize on the growing need for technology in the small and medium business sector. Moreover, the launch came at a time when the U.S. stimulus bill is set to offer financial support and subsidy for smaller enterprises investing in technology.

The Smart Cube is bundled with applications like email, calendaring, security, accounting tools and finance management software.

IBM says it has been inspired to launch such a package in the United States following the success of similar offerings in India.

There is another reason to launch such a package, according to IBM. The IT major has cited a recent study report from IDC (News - Alert), which estimated that the global market for small-business technology will be worth $675 billion by 2013.

IDC had even suggested that combining hardware, software and services in a single product could be an ideal way to attract the attention of small enterprises.

Oracle Wanted Sun's Software Unit Only, Records Show

Larry Ellison's protestations to the contrary notwithstanding, Oracle may have been forced to buy the whole company to close deal.

Despite CEO Larry Ellison's claim that Oracle (NSDQ: ORCL)'s acquisition of Sun Microsystems (NSDQ: JAVA) will give his company the ability to construct unmatched business systems that are integrated from "applications to disk," Oracle originally sought to acquire only Sun's crown-jewel software assets while leaving its declining hardware unit to the vultures, according to a regulatory filing.

Oracle on March 12 "sent a letter to our board proposing the acquisition by Oracle of certain of our software assets, a minority equity investment by Oracle in our common stock, and entering into certain strategic relationships," Sun said in a filing Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The ultimate outcome of the negotiations differed greatly from Oracle's original offer. Oracle on April 19 struck a deal to acquire all of Sun -- including its aging line of Solaris-powered Sparc servers -- for $7.4 billion, or $9.50 per share.

So why did Oracle agree to a big-bucks deal for a vendor that derives most of its sales from a declining box business? The SEC filing shows that Oracle's hand may have been forced by IBM, which was engaged in its own merger talks with Sun earlier this year, and by yet another vendor -- possibly Hewlett-Packard.

Sun's filing notes that in addition to Oracle, its springtime suitors included "Company A" and "Company B." A is widely believed to be Big Blue, while B, most logically, is HP. It thus appears that Oracle grudgingly acquired Sun's hardware line just to get its hands on the ubiquitous Java Web development platform -- and keep it from IBM (NYSE: IBM)'s possession.

IBM Offers Trial 'System S' Software For Stream Computing

IBM (NYSE:IBM) released IBM System S, a trial version of its previously experimental super-fast stream computing software for analyzing massive amounts of data in realtime.

IBM also said it is opening the IBM European Stream Computing Center in Dublin, Ireland, which will carry out research, customer support and advanced testing for European customers who apply stream computing to their business processes.

System S is designed for what IBM called "perpetual analytics," the analysis of continuous streams of data such as stock trades, retail sales and weather. IBM said the technology is capable of analyzing hundreds or even thousands of simultaneous data streams and providing realtime analysis to financial traders, retail managers, government agencies and others.

Last month IBM and TD Securities unveiled a prototype of what they called the world's fastest automated options trading system based on the System S technology running on IBM's Blue Gene supercomputer. At the time IBM called the new software "InfoSphere Streams."
