Software gives firms power over energy use

Cisco Systems is poised to ramp up its network equipment to not only ferry Internet traffic, but intelligently reduce power consumption for corporate customers.

The world's largest networking company is due to announce today a new software technology called EnergyWise that can allow users to monitor and manage energy usage from phones, PCs and building control units all from one of Cisco's switches.

The multiphase rollout of the initiative, which gets under way next month, will allow customers to first control power-over-Ethernet devices such as phones and wireless access points and then later computers and printers and eventually building heating and air-conditioning units. Lighting and elevators should be possible by early next year. The free software will work on an expanding number of Cisco's Catalyst switches, including many models made over the past five years.

"EnergyWise automates what you do at home as you walk around and turn off lights and air-conditioning in different rooms," said Inbar Lasser-Raab, director of market management for Cisco Network Systems' business unit. "It turns off devices that are not needed at the time or switches them to a lower power consumption mode."

IBM Updates Lotus Foundations for Small Businesses

At IBM's Lotusphere Conference the company announced an update of its Lotus Foundations line of Linux-based software for midmarket companies, as well as new Web 2.0 tools.

IBM wants small to medium-size businesses to know they are invested in providing midmarket companies with cost-effective solutions by offering a growing portfolio of low or no-cost software.

This week at Lotusphere, IBM announced an update of its Lotus Foundations line of small business software, built on IBM's Express Advantage program. The Lotus Foundations hardware and software system helps businesses from five to 500 employees collaborate with tools like email, office applications, file sharing, back up and recovery.

The company also announced the opening of the Lotus Foundations Branch Office. IBM says many large organizations running Lotus Domino, like banks, professional services firms and insurance agencies have significant portions of their businesses in branch offices without on-site IT.

With Lotus Foundations Branch Office, large enterprise Lotus Domino customers will be able to extend existing skills and data to remote offices quickly and efficiently. IBM says it will help large organizations reduce costs and better manage operations by supporting the often complex technology needs of the branch and satellite offices with a fully integrated appliance. The company is touting evaluations of Lotus Foundations' functionality and ease-of-use by Research In Motion (RIM) and ShoreTel, who say they believe it is a good platform to reach the SMB market.

    Report: Oracle Slashes 500 Jobs

    Software giant Oracle reportedly cut approximately 500 jobs in North America last Friday, according to published reports.

    The Wall Street Journal Wednesday said the affected employees were in the company's software sales and consulting businesses in database management.

    The paper cited inside sources, although an Oracle spokesperson declined to comment. The supposed jobs cuts, however, are fewer than the rumored 10 percent that was whispered on Wall Street.

    With the reported job cuts, Oracle joins other tech companies slammed by the weak economy, most notably Nortel, which sought bankruptcy protection Wednesday. Other tech heavyweights that are also feeling pain include Lexmark, EMC, SAP, Nvidia and Seagate.

    Last month, Oracle reported second-quarter results for the period ended Nov. 30, with an increase of 6 percent year-over-year to $5.6 billion. However, net income fell 1 percent to $1.3 billion. Revenue also took a hit, falling 3 percent to $1.6 billion.

    Major software companies sued for patent infringement

    Twenty-two major software and security companies are being sued for alleged patent infringement by a little-known entity now controlling the two patents in question.

    Information Protection and Authentication of Texas (IPAT) filed suit on Dec. 30 against companies such as Microsoft, Symantec and CA, alleging infringement of U.S. patents No. 5,311,591 and No. 5,412,717.

    Patent 5,311,591 is called “Computer System Security Method and Apparatus for Creating and Using Program Authorization Information Data Structures” and was granted in May 1994. The inventor is credited as Addison M. Fischer of Naples, Fla. The innovation is intended to allow a computer user to control how an application behaves in order to thwart other malicious software.

      China jails top Microsoft software counterfeiters

      China and counterfeiting go hand-in-hand like the couple that's been together since kindergarten. The piracy rate in the country is absurdly high, but the government has taken steps to slowly cut it down. Most recently, the country sentenced 11 ringleaders of what Microsoft is calling "the world's largest software counterfeiting syndicate." They were arrested in July 2007 following an international investigation led by China's Public Security Bureau (PSB) and the FBI.

      The 11 accused were sentenced to jail for periods ranging from 1.5 to 6.5 years depending on their participation in the syndicate that manufactured and distributed more than an estimated $2 billion worth of counterfeit Microsoft software.

      The fake software was high quality, meaning it was hard to distinguish from the real thing, was found in 36 countries, spanned 19 products, and was produced in at least 11 languages. Naturally, Microsoft was happy with China's move: "Microsoft greatly appreciates the work of China's PSB and the FBI in taking strong enforcement action against this global software counterfeiting syndicate," said David Finn, associate general counsel for Worldwide Anti-Piracy and Anti-Counterfeiting at Microsoft.

      We are UK based one of the leading colleges. We are looking for experienced and qualified service provider for our requirement software development. We are looking to have Payroll and HR Software. Our total numbers of employees are 314 and accordingly need to develop the software.
      Scope of work:
      1. The system must include the modules which are Payroll, Basic HR, Employee Self service, Manager self service, Expenses and a comprehensive report writer.
      2. The payroll and human resources system must be fully integrated.
      3. The System should be fully web-enabled, yet secure through the use of passwords and security access definition.
      4. The report writer must allow management information to be disseminated in a number of different formats e.g. paper, HTML, intranet, web.
      5. The System should fully support multi-user operation with no limit to the number of users (or log ins for each user) available.
      6. The DB Server should run on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 platform. The minimum number of concurrent users is currently 10, but the college is rapidly expanding and this should be taken into account when sizing the system.
      7. Automatic calculation of allowances e.g. holiday pay for hourly paid employees.
      8. Real time data entry and validation.
      Payment will be done as per agreed milestones. Interested service providers are requested to send their proposal on or before January 9th, 2009 by midday via post, courier, hand delivered or e-mail only. This tender is Global and off site.
