Computer generates how development will affect county

Planners in Accomack County will be able to use a new computer program to see maps of what the county would look like when fully developed and how current zoning laws affect farmland and watersheds.

The model shows that under the current agricultural zoning Accomack would have 60,374 dwelling buildout.

Planning commissioners and the public saw a demonstration of the program's capabilities at Wednesday's planning commission meeting. Northampton County planners and residents will see the demonstration at a Dec. 11 workshop 7 p.m. at Northampton High School.

Planning staff earlier Wednesday also received orientation and training on the software.

A regional group, the Delmarva Atlantic Watershed Network -- made up of planning staff and others from four counties in three states -- sponsored the development of a land use and water quality nutrient analysis using the program and data from the four counties involved: Sussex (Del.), Worcester (Md.), Accomack and Northampton.
