Since Web 2.0 poked its way into the corporate province, firms have been gearing up to implement social software in internets, intranets and extranets. And whether it’s being used to communicate with customers or enable collaboration between employees, this year will see more businesses than ever embrace the possibilities of Web 2.0.

A survey of 1,800 executives worldwide by McKinsey last year, for instance, revealed that a fifth of them were already using blogs to improve customer service or solicit customer feedback. It’s a sure bet that 2008 will see firms not only exploring blogs, but also peer to peer networking, social networks and podcasts.

Web 2.0 Development For The Common Man

Talk about tilting at windmills. WaveMaker CEO Chris Keene is challenging Microsoft's Visual Studio while simultaneously pointing out the drawbacks of Java development. Keene may be suffering delusions of grandeur--or perhaps he's onto something.

Keene has been beating the drum of faster, easier Web 2.0 development since joining WaveMaker (then called ActiveGrid) in January 2007. The company's WaveMaker Visual Ajax Studio pulls popular open source development tools -- Spring, Hibernate, Dojo, etc. -- into a visual application builder. (InformationWeek featured WaveMaker as our Startup Of The Week earlier this month.)

Not long ago, WaveMaker released the results of a survey on Web 2.0 development that it commissioned from Precision Marketing Group. The key finding: 83% of respondents said their companies wanted to move applications to the Web but lacked the resources and expertise to do it. Keene argues the answer is to empower "nonexpert" developers to do that work using WaveMaker.

Launched on Monday, Adobe claims AIR combines the dynamic nature of the web with the data capabilities of the desktop, while Flex 3 is a cross-platform set of components and tools for building rich internet applications (RIAs) that run on any browser and operating system.

Targeted at both designers and developers, AIR and Flex 3 are described by Adobe chief technology officer Kevin Lynch as technologies intended to "create highly interactive and expressive applications".

Who benefits from a website's privacy policy?

"We may keep you informed of such products and services (including special offers, discounts, offers, competitions and so on) by any of the following methods: E-mail, Telephone, SMS text message and other electronic messages such as picture messaging ..." 75% of Local web design companies ignore disabled people

Simpleweb a Bristol(UK) based web design and development specialist, recently discovered that over 75% of local web design companies have websites that are not accessible to the visually impaired or people with disabilities.

Mark Panay, MD of Simpleweb Ltd, revealed how he and colleagues tested hundreds of websites from web design companies offering website solutions that should be accessible to people with disabilities, but the majority of the time were found to be severely lacking.

"Out of the 200 websites that we checked we found that more than 75% didn't validate with W3C compliance (correctly made websites), with approximately the same percentage again not passing any of the current web based accessibility tests. We find this very disheartening for the current wave of websites being built for small businesses and their potential users."
