I-T Dept Conducts Searches at Software Firm Tulip

The Income Tax department today conducted searches at various premises of IT company Tulip Telecom for alleged evasion of taxes running into crores of rupee.

According to sources in the I-T department, searches are being conducted in at least six to seven premises in the national capital region by 40 officials.

A spokesperson of Tulip Telecom said he has "no official communication" on the incident and would not be able to comment.

Some survey operations related to the same firm were also conducted at Jammu two days ago.

Tulip Telecom is a data telecom service and IT solutions provider. According to the official website of the company, it has "revenues in excess of Rs 16,14.40 crore ($322 million) in the financial year ending 31st March 2009 and a market capitalisation in excess of Rs 2,131.50 crores ($426 million as on 31st March 2009)".

Tulip shares are listed on bourses. Its shares on BSE today closed at over Rs 954.90, a gain of over Rs 13 from its previous closing.

Tulip Telecom plans to launch value-added services, such as push mail and corporate internet services, for the corporate sector in a few months.

Intel to Acquire Embedded Software Firm Wind River

Move intended to grow chip giant's presence outside traditional markets

Intel has announced its intention to acquire Wind River Systems, a leading developer of real-time and embedded software, as part of a strategy to grow its processor and software presence outside the traditional PC and server markets.

The chip giant said that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Wind River, which will become a wholly owned subsidiary, but continue with its current business model. The deal is expected to close this summer, subject to regulatory approval.

Wind River is a developer of embedded software and development tools, most notably its VxWorks real-time operating system that is used in a wide variety of hardware, from printers and wireless routers to Honda's Asimo robot and even Nasa space probes.

VxWorks runs on a number of processor architectures, including x86, ARM, MIPS and PowerPC.

US software firm sees great potential in Region 10 BPO

American software executive Todd Grannis visited Cagayan de Oro two years ago for a vacation with his wife Malissa, but never expected he´d one day be considering making it a base for his international operations.

Grannis is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Visp.net, based in Oregon, USA called which designs and markets software aimed at making Internet Service Providers (ISPs) better.

"I came here on the word of my friend Glenn Lewman, but after few days saw the potential for the future growth of our company," Grannis said. Lewman is one of the founding fathers of the city´s famous whitewater rafting industry and is the maker of the famous Sotar (for State-Of-The-Art Raft).

"People we met here were so warm, friendly and kind," Grannis recalls. "It was an emotionally rich experience for me."

Although Cagayan de Oro is one of the Philippines biggest cities, Grannis noted its cost of labor is relatively lower compared to Manila and Cebu, leaving workers with larger discretionary incomes. He also notes it is relatively safer than many other urban centers in the country.

Like Lewman before him, Grannis "did the math" and noted how the highly skilled yet affordable manpower in the information and communications industry (ICT) of Cagayan de Oro would build on his company´s strategic advantages and give them a leg up on their competitors.

The last few years have witnessed the mushrooming of many product development companies. At present, there are about 500 product development firms in India, and each year about 80 new companies are added to the list. Software industry body, Nasscom, has been promoting the product development concept in India through various initiatives. In the first half of this month, it is organising its second annual product conclave in Bangalore — a forum that provides a platform for software product firms to share ideas and excel. In which direction is the software product development companies moving?

The software product industry in India, if you look at the trends over the past few years, is yet to attain any momentum, when compared with the software services or BPO industry. However, we have done an extensive report on the product industry, wherein we have identified 4-5 factors, which tell us the time is ripe now for India to emerge as a hub for product development.The emergence of technology is fast changing the way delivery of software happens. Companies earlier were selling products through channel or retail partners. Now the whole delivery of products can happen through software as service, cloud computing and the like. Software firm grows as part of area's technology base
