Software Exports from State Go Up

CHENNAI: Despite the global recession, Tamil Nadu saw a 29 per cent increase in the export of software products during 2008-09, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday.

In value terms the exports in 2008-09 rose to Rs.36,680 crore from Rs. 28,426 crore the previous year, he said, launching through video-conferencing the activities of the Information and Communication Technology Academy, an initiative of the Confederation of Indian Industry, that is supported by the Central and State governments.

The increase was possible because of an exclusive policy formulated by the State government for the IT sector, he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said 2.5 lakh persons had got employment in the IT sector in the State during 2008-09. “This is a knowledge sector and hence special training for college teachers will benefit students ultimately,” he said.

In the next two to three years, the Academy would train around 5,000 teachers across the State. About 2.5 lakh students across Tamil Nadu would benefit.

The Chief Minister said the Centre was giving Rs.6 crore as assistance to the State to conduct the training programme. Of this, Rs.4 crore had been sanctioned for the first phase.

Bangalore Software Exports Grow 32%

Software exports from Bangalore is expected to grow by 32-33 per cent during the current fiscal.

This is against a projected growth of 28-29 per cent, according to B.V. Naidu, director, Software Technology Parks of India-Bangalore. Software exports from Bangalore stood at Rs 12,350 crore during 2002-03 as against Rs 9,903 crore in 2001-02, and Rs 7,475 crore in 2000-01.

Speaking at the inauguration of i-flex park, Naidu expressed happiness on the robust growth that Bangalore had witnessed in the current fiscal.

“Nearly 131 new companies have started their operations in Bangalore during the current fiscal. These companies have invested a total of Rs 1800 crore,” he said.

Software Industry Targets $54 Bn Exports By 2010

Slowdown hit, India's software exporters are exploring new markets in the middle east and Africa to increase IT exports by 10 per cent and touch USD 54 billion in the current fiscal.

IT software exports were valued at USD 49.5 billion in 2008-09, which was about 14 per cent more than that in 2007-08.

"We are not expecting much growth in exports in 2009-10 due to the global slowdown," Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) Executive Director D K Sareen said. The ESC, however, has set a higher target for growth in electronics hardware exports, he added.
